Winning and Losing in the New Economy

CFP: Work, Employment and Society conference

I am hoping you will be willing to publicize the upcoming Work, Employment and Society Conference which takes place at the University of Nottingham on September 11-13, 2001. Plenary papers - addressing the theme of "Winning and Losing in the New Economy" - will be given by Naomi Klein, Theo Nichols, Kate Purcell and Richard Sennett. Sub-themes will address issues relating to:

  • Inequalities of wealth and power
  • Emotional labour
  • The historical meanings of work
  • Working (up a) class identity
  • Risk, flexibility, insecurity
  • Stress and work intensification
  • Re-regulating the labour market
  • Slavery - old and new

Papers addressing other themes will also be welcome. If you would like to present a paper, please send a short abstract (300 words max) to the conference organisers by April 20th, 2001. Registration forms can be found at the conference website: www.nottingham.ac.uk/wes2001.
