WEA Course - Europe, Democracy and Citizenship in the 21st Century
Monday 21 September to Monday 30 November 2015 (Half Term break on Monday 26 October)
Originally a trade agreement over iron and steel, over a number of decades, ‘Europe’ developed into a series of institutions; the European Union, the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Central Bank. Today all of these institutions are under strain. The future of Europe is now an open question.
This course will look at the development of post war Europe; the rise of the European Union and the Euro currency, Nato and foreign policy, migration and citizenship, governance and political parties, and peoples’ responses to austerity and racism across Europe.
Course activities include a visit to the archives of the People’s History Museum to examine relevant documents, and meeting PHM Living History character Gabrielle who explains why she moved from the Caribbean to Manchester in the 1950s. Delivered by WEA tutor Mark Krantz.

Show Me the Money - Political Economy from 1700 to Present

From Hogarth’s 1721 painting of the South Sea Bubble which depicts the ‘market’ as an evil wheel of fortune, to the Credit Crunch Lexicon by Simon Roberts which lists the vocabulary of the post 2008 economic crash; art has shaped the way we ‘imagine’ finance.
This five week course explores the history, economics and politics that lie behind the art on display in the museum’s latest changing exhibition Show Me the Money: The Image of Finance, 1700 to the Present. Delivered by WEA tutor Mark Krantz.
