Anarchism: PhD Studentships

Call for Applications, Loughborough University

The Department of Politics, International Relations & European Studies (soon to become the Department of Politics, History & International Relations) has a minimum of two fully-funded postgraduate research studentships available, to begin in October 2009.

The Studentships provide a maintenance award of £13,290 p.a. for three years, and cover fees at the UK/EU level.

The deadline for the receipt of applications is 30 April 2009.

Please note:
- The Studentships are only for full-time study.
- They are only open to UK/EU applicants.
- Any applicant who is eligible to do so will be expected to apply to the AHRC/ESRC as appropriate (which has to be done through the Department).

Applications are invited in any area which lies within the Department's areas of expertise, but Dr Ruth Kinna and Dr Dave Berry would welcome any research proposals in the broad area of anarchist studies (history, politics or theory).

Ruth Kinna's research interests are in the history of ideas, late nineteenth-century socialism and anarchist thought and contemporary anarchism. Current interests include the relationship between anarchism and utopianism, early anarchist terrorism and debates about anarchism and Marxism. She is the author of Anarchism A Beginner's Guide (Oneworld, 2005) and is the editor of Anarchist Studies.

Dave Berry's research interests are in the 20th century history of anarchism and of the 'alternative left' (particularly in France, and particularly the libertarian communist tradition) and in labour history (particularly syndicalism). Publications include A History of the French Anarchist Movement, 1914-1945 (Greenwood Press, 2002 & AK Press, 2009) and a number of papers on the politics of Daniel Guérin. He is reviews editor of Anarchist Studies.

Ruth and Dave were among the founding members of the Anarchist Studies Network (http://anarchist-studies-network.org.uk/); Loughborough was the venue for the First Anarchist Studies Conference in September 2008; the Department has already seen the successful completion of one PhD on anarchism (Alex Prichard on Proudhon and International Politics), and between them Ruth and Dave are currently supervising a further four PhD students in the area (Saku Pinta on convergences and divergences between anarchism and Marxism, Sureyyya Turkeli on anarchism and ethnocentrism, Matt Wilson on anarchist ethics, and Gwendolyn Windpassinger on queer anarchism in contemporary Buenos Aires).

If you are interested in applying, please contact Ruth ([mailto]r.e.kinna@lboro.ac.uk[/mailto]) or Dave ([mailto]d.g.berry@lboro.ac.uk[/mailto]). We are happy to discuss draft proposals before a formal application is made. Further details about the University can be found here:
