is now available on DVD

'The Moving Past' is an anthology of archival film about work in Ontario made in the years following World War One. The films, produced by the Ontario Motion Picture Bureau, offers fascinatig glimpses into a rapidly industrializing province.

'The Moving Past' anthology contains seven distinct docmentaries, each exploring a different aspect of industry or technology in Ontario. Shot in crisp black and white, the films now have a lively musical soundtrack created for this edition. The collection will appeal to those with an interest in labour, industrial, or social history, gender studies, technology, or film studies.

The one-hour DVD includes:

'Her own fault' (1922) explores the morality and independence of factory girls in a Toronto rubber factory

'Life in a Mining Camp' (1921) sought to promote labour migration to the industry by depicting a rosy, almost comical, view of working conditions.

'Your Future Car' (1922) provides a detailed glimpse of production methods and skill at what was probably Durant Motors in Toronto.

'Story of Stone' (1924) presents the construction of a provincial government building by following the the stone from quarryng to the final artistic details of the stonemason.

'Silver Mining in Ontario' (1919) is a detailed documentary look at mining conditions in northern Ontario.

'The Making of an 8" Explosive Shell (1918) depicts the increased mechanization of factories during World War One.

'Speeding up you Business' (1922) explores the automation of the Toronto Post Office sorting station.
