International Conference on Slavery, Unfree Labour & Revolt in Asia and the Indian Ocean Region

Call for Papers
An international conference on Slavery, Unfree Labour and Revolt in Asia and the Indian Ocean Region will take place in Avignon from 17-19 May 2001. It will examine protest against slavery and other forms of unfree labour in Asia and the Indian Ocean region. Themes include:
- the relationship between revolt and different systems of unfree labour (indigenous and imported)
- the forms that protest assumed (passive/violent; timing; durability)
- the structure of revolt (leadership, ideology, demographics, survival tactics)
- gender relations in protest and in rebel communities
- the ethnic characterisation and composition of revolt
- the language of revolt
- consequences of protest
Those wishing to attend are invited to submit a title and a short outline of their paper by 1st December 2000. All papers accepted for the conference must reach the convenor by 1st April 2001 on disk (Word 6 or more recent) and on a hard copy. These will be made available to all participants. The conference will be organised in thematic sessions at which discussants will present a summary of relevant papers, which will be followed by discussion.
There will also be a conference trip to the reputed Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards (wine-tasting) and a conference dinner.
A registration fee of FF 600 (FF 300 for students) is payable by money order by 1st April 2001 at the latest.
