We're pleased to announce an International Symposium on Proletarian Literature in East Asia to be held November 1-2, 2002, at the University of Chicago.
"East Asian Proletarian literature" refers to the creative and critical production of those who confronted the problems of uneven economic development in East Asia in the 1920s and 1930s. This symposium brings together scholars of Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean proletarian literature, drama and the visual arts. Together, we will reinvestigate works by writers and artists who examined the relationships between capitalism, colonialism, class struggle, and nationalism during a period of tremendous industrial development, political unrest, booming mass media, and immanent war.
