Twenty Years On! The Great Miners Strike in Historical and International Perspective

Saturday November 1st 2003
Institute of Historical Research
Malet St, London

March 2004 marks the twentieth anniversary of the start of the 1984/5 British miners strike, one of the great labour struggles of the second half of the twentieth century.

This conference seeks to mark the event by placing miners strikes and mining trade unionism in an historical and international perspective. One strand will focus specifically on the British miners strikes of 1972, 1974 and 1984/5 and how the left related to them. A second section will relate these conflicts to the longer history of coal- mining in Britain. A third strand will aim to put these epic labour struggles into an international perspective by examining the experiences of South African, American and Zambian miners. This day-conference will be organised by the London Socialist Historians' Group.
