In the context of ongoing crises in Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Bolivia, as well as the rise of right-wing and populist movements across the region, ANDINXS is a timely workshop addressing the increasingly contested relationship between politics and gender in the Andes. Women’s, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements have been central in recent uprisings, but their role has often gone unnoticed. Beyond recent movements, in looking at intersections of politics and gender in the Andes we hope to disrupt narratives about contemporary Andean politics.
The title of this event – “ANDINXS” – is a provocation for participants and scholars to consider debates around the role of inclusive language in Spanish-speaking countries. Recently, the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) rejected the use of gender-neutral suffixes in its style guide. Yet, among feminist, LGBTQ+ and other activists it is an increasingly popular strategy.
We therefore invite proposals for papers for our workshop ANDINXS: Addressing Contemporary Politics and Gender in the Andes to be held on Friday 28th February at University College London. The workshop is designed to facilitate an interdisciplinary and collaborative discussion.
Possible areas for papers include, but are not limited to:
- Feminist and women’s movements
- LGBTQ+ activism
- Gender and identity
- The intersection of race/ethnicity with gender in the Andes
- Queer perspectives
- Masculinities
Proposals should be sent to: andinxs2020@gmail.com by 24th January 2020. Proposals should include a title and an abstract of no more than 300 words and a short bio and contact details. We strongly encourage the participation of PhD students and early researchers working on the Andes in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, International Development, Latin American Studies, Politics, Queer Studies, and Sociology.
This event is generously funded by octagon. There is allocated funding available to subsidise participant travel from outside of London.
