Labour in Late-20th Century Scotland

Conference in Edinburgh on Oct 4

The 2003 conference of the Scottish Labour History Society will be held at the Quaker Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, on Saturday 4th October. Proceedings will begin at 10am. The theme of the conference is 'Labour, the Trade Union Movement and Industrial Relations in late 20th Century Scotland'.

Three papers will be presented:

  • Dr Gregor Gall, Reader in Industrial Relations, University of Stirling, will discuss 'Workers, trade unions and industrial relations in Scotland since the 1970's: examining the evidence for difference and distinctiveness'.
  • Professor Alan McKinlay, School of Social Sciences, St Andrews University, will consider 'The dynamics of workplace politics: Clydeside c.1968-1979'.
  • Allan Armstrong, Scottish Federation of Socialist Teachers, EIS member and Edinburgh based Secondary School Teacher, will provide an insight into 'Teacher militancy in Scotland: an activists perspective'.

The papers will be followed by a plenary discussion and the AGM of the society. Non-members are welcome and refreshments will be available.
