Culture in Radical Politics

Conference in Manchester on Nov 22

The Labour History Archive and Study Centre holds the archives of the Labour Party and the British Communist Party as well as collections that document many aspects of the history of radical political struggle in the UK since the mid-nineteenth century.

As part of a programme of activities designed to promote the study of the collections to new audiences we are organising a day conference called Culture in Radical Politics.

Culture in Radical politics is a day conference discussing the influence of left wing politics on popular culture including, theatre, sport and literature within left-wing politics.

The day conference will include a full day of lectures, lunch, an optional tour of the Labour History Archive and Study Centre and a performance based on scripts from the Unity Theatre Collection.

Guest speakers will include:

  • Harry Landis, Chair of Unity Theatre Trust and President of Equity
  • Dr Robert Poole, ‘The March to Peterloo: Politics, festivity and culture’
  • Dr Malcom Chase, Chartists’ poetry and song
  • Dennis Pye, The Clarion Movement
  • Professor Tony Jackson, Radical Theatre

Culture in Radical Politics will be held on Saturday 22nd November 2003, 9.30am-4.30pm in the Mechanics Institute Manchester, tickets cost £20. [£10 students/unwaged]
