CFP: Labour History

Call for Papers - Co-operation and the Politics of Consumption

Labour History, which is a member of the History Co-operative at the University of Illinois Press, will publish a thematic section in the November 2006 issue on 'Co-operation and Politics of Consumption'. This thematic explores the politics of co-operation in relation to consumer goods and financial services. Specific institutions include Starr-Bowkett societies, retail co-operatives, wholesale co-operatives, building societies and credit unions. The editors will be Nikola Balnave from the University of Western Sydney and Greg Patmore from the University of Sydney.

We are particularly interested in the following issues:

  1. Ideology
  2. General management
  3. Economic performance
  4. Employee Relations
  5. Relationship with the labour movement
  6. Gender Relations
  7. Ethnic/Race Relations
  8. Relationship with Private Sector/State
  9. International relations

Papers may focus on any national situation and comparative papers are particularly welcome.

Abstracts of 300 words should be forwarded to the editors by 31 December for consideration.

Papers selected will be presented at a conference organised by the Business and Labour History Group, University of Sydney, Australia, to be held on 17 March at the University of Sydney. Papers submitted to the conference should be of 6,000 to 8,000 words and submitted in accordance with the Labour History styleguide.

Papers can then be submitted to Labour History by 16 April for consideration by referees. The successful papers will appear in the November 2006 issue of Labour History.
