Che's America

Ann: a conference in Manchester, 29 September 2006

A conference

Date: Friday 29th September 2006
Venue: Manchester Museum, University of Manchester

The event explores the América that Ernesto 'Che' Guevara encountered in his travels across the continent prior to boarding the Granma in late November 1956 on his way to Cuba and, more important, the revolutionary pantheon. The critical and box office success of Walter Salles's film, The Motorcycle Diaries, based on the diaries written by Che and Alberto Granado during their journey across Latin America in the early 1950s, has revived general interest in Che's life and, particularly, in his pre-revolutionary experience. This conference examines, from a scholarly perspective, 'what Che saw' in the Latin America of the 1950s that Salles depicts in his film.
