USS 2011 panel on utopia & social movements

Call for papers

For the forthcoming Utopian Studies Society Cyprus conference (8-11 July, University of Cyprus, Nicosia - http://www.utopianstudieseurope.org/), I am looking for people interested in participating in a panel or panels on the theme of utopia and social movements.

My interests range from the methodological -- in other words, how one might conceptualise the study of social movements within the framework of utopian studies, and the implications of taking social movements seriously for the philosophy, politics, and sociology of utopia -- to more substantive (theoretically and empirically informed) papers concerning the creation of utopian spaces in concrete social or political practices intended to cultivate the possibility of alternative social relations. I am particularly interested in papers informed by anarchist theory and/or focused on anarchist or anarchist-inspired social movements.

Anyone interested in any aspect of the relationship between utopia and social movements is welcome to contact me at ldavis [at] oceanfree.net. Expressions of interest should be sent as soon as possible, but in any case no later than 11th February.

Best,

Laurence Davis
