Lindh was staying in Russia - which later became the Soviet Union - between 1911 and 1920, with a few interruptions for other trips. Lindh mastered the Russian language and wrote in both Russian and Swedish newspapers and magazines. After the revolution of 1917, he became a correspondent for the newspaper Social-Democrat and published also in the journal Time. In connection with this, and through visits to Stockholm, he came in contact with the Social Democratic party's leadership.

In 1918 he published some of his more detailed correspondences in the book Bolshevism in the Soviet Empire. An eyewitness observations and reflections under the pseudonym N. Strannikov, which in Russian means pilgrim or wanderer. 1918-1919 he worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian affairs. This trust, now as an expert, he also received in 1920 on a few occasions.

1924 Nils Lindh worked as press ombudsman at the Swedish Embassy in Moscow. Diplomatic relations were established in this year, since Sweden then had recognized the Soviet Union and resumed diplomatic relations. Since Lindh studied at Uppsala University and had experience as a journalist from Stockholm-magazine and also received a Lars Hierta scholarship by the National Press Club for studies in Russia, he was well qualified for the position. Lindh behaved relatively sympathetic to the events in the new country USSR. He argued that it was the masses who pressed from below and that it was impossible to stop the development.
