80 years ago, the Spanish Civil War started. Approximately seven hundred Dutch young men - and a single girl - left for Spain in the period '36 -'38 to help the endangered Spanish Republic.
On the new website spanjestrijders.nl, data and stories about this almost forgotten group are collected. In Dutch historiography the Spanish Civil war hardly plays a role and the Dutch International Brigadists left relatively little about their experiences.Immediately after their return they were denationalized, which caused them a lot of difficulties during World War II. During the Cold War they were also in society’s bad books. Who were they? From letters, diaries and interviews published on the website, a varied and sometimes funny and moving picture emerges.
Spanjestrijders.nl is a Dutch-language website.
