CfP: Rethinking Forced Labour, Indentureship and Human Trafficking in Caribbean Contexts

Call for papers, deadline 20 December 2017

Caribbean Studies Association Annual Conference

Havana, Cuba, 4-8 June 2018

Call for papers:Rethinking Forced Labour, Indentureship and Human Trafficking in Caribbean Contexts

In this session we wish to explore the ways histories of slavery, indentureship and other forms of forced labour in the Caribbean connect to or help inform 21st century discourses of human trafficking and modern-slavery.  Questions that could guide the panel session: Can analogies be drawn between the historical and the contemporary, or are we speaking of discreet and different labour regimes? Are the concepts of slavery and indentureship useful in today’s contexts? Is “sex trafficking” an issue for the Caribbean today, and in what ways does this connect to the various sex sectors in the region?  In what ways do resistances to slavery and indentureship in the past inform today’s anti-trafficking  discourse in the region?

Co-organizers and presenters: Kamala Kempadoo (York University) and Audra Diptee (Carleton University)

Submission:  Please send a 300-word abstract and a CV by December 20th to both organizers:
