Con-IH 20 Global and International History
Labor and Discipline from a Global Perspective
Harvard University
April 2nd and 3rd, 2020

The organizing committee for the Harvard Graduate Student Conference on International History (Con-IH) invites graduate students to submit proposals for its twentieth annual conference. This year’s theme is Labor and Discipline from a Global Perspective. The conference will take place at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 2nd and 3rd, 2020.

Con-IH is looking for submissions on a broad range of topics relating to global, international, or transnational intersections of labor and discipline. As the fields of labor and carceral studies continue to expand, questions of labor and discipline become increasingly relevant to our global understanding of freedom, work, and capital. Con-IH  seeks to promote cross-disciplinary as well as cross-regional explorations that put themes of labor and discipline in conversation with each other to answer broad-reaching questions.

We welcome submissions that address one or more of the following themes, but the list is only suggestive:

1.    Labor organizations and radicalism
2.    Convict labor and prisoner’s rights movements
3.    The scientific management of work
4.    Labor law
5.    Labor of informal economies (sex workers, drug trafficking, and day laborers)
6.    Labor, migration, and borders
7.    Hidden labor
8.    Gender and labor
9.    Indentured labor, enslaved labor
10.    Child labor

Accepted papers will be grouped for presentation within three or four panels each composed of graduate students and one faculty commentator for each presenter. Participation in Con-IH presents an unparalleled opportunity to engage in lively and lengthy discussions with an emerging cohort of researchers-in-training from around the world, as well as with faculty from Harvard and elsewhere.

Graduate students interested in participating in the conference should submit a 300-word proposal and one-page Curriculum Vitae in a single PDF document to conih@fas.harvard.edu. Please title your submission “Lastname_ShortTitle.” Proposals must be received by November 22, 2019 in order to be considered. We anticipate being able to reimburse reasonable travel and lodging expenses for all participants. As the date approaches, additional information will be posted on the conference website at con-ih.com.
