Seven decades have passed since the largest set of heritage interventions during the Portuguese colonial period was carried out. The public exposition of the remains of St. Francis Xavier in 1952 was a major event congregating Catholics from Goa, Daman and Diu and also attracting pilgrims from other parts of the Eastern world. Among the preparations for this celebration, several missions were sent to Portuguese India to study the cultural heritage of these territories, which had previously remained mostly unknown. A vast set of reintegration works was also carried out on the monuments of Old Goa by Portuguese technicians with extensive experience in heritage interventions in Portugal.
The focus of these interventions was basically on heritage with a Portuguese influence, replicating processes already applied for decades in the metropole. However, in other territories under European colonial rule – such as the British Raj or French Indochina –
deeper studies and conservation works on pre-colonial heritage were carried out, which allowed for unveiling monuments and artistic pieces almost unknown, until then, by most people around the world. In some cases, the processes followed in colonial territories were introduced, to a greater or lesser extent, in the heritage debate within the metropole. The level and type of heritage action in the colonial territories ranged according to the colonial power and the cultural richness of those territories.
The next special issue of the journal ARTisON, to be released at the end of 2022, has Heritage safeguarding in colonial times as its theme. This special issue is the result of collaboration between the ARTIS - Institute of Art History of the University of Lisbon and the ICOMOS ISCSBH - International Scientific Committee on Shared Built Heritage. The intention of this ARTisON issue is to reflect on the processes, ideologies, persons and institutions related to heritage safeguarding in colonial territories during the colonial period.
Articles might include the subjects mentioned below or others considered significant to the issue’s theme:
- Study missions on the cultural heritage in colonial territories;
- Heritage safeguarding works in colonial territories;
- Ideological instrumentalisation of cultural heritage in colonial territories;
- Legislation and institutions dedicated to the heritage safeguarding in colonial territories;
- Circulation of heritage theories and practices between metropoles and colonial
Submission guidelines
Architects, art historians, archaeologists and other technicians, as well the concerned community, are invited to submit articles until 30 July 2022 following the ARTisON guidelines.

ARTisON is an open access journal indexed in the DOAJ, ERIH PLUS, CROSSREF, LATINDEX, CAPES, DRJI, MIAR and EBSCO.
Selection and publication
All works submitted for publication in the ARTis ON journal will be submitted by its Scientific Coordinator to blind peer-review process. The evaluation will focus its work inaccordance with its originality, relevance and scientific quality of the works.
