Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time

Workshop Series, 16/October 2020 - 12 March 2021

2020-2021 KEYWORD WORKSHOP SERIES (ZOOM)

This online series is organized by the Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time (DéPOT) SSHRC Partnership project’s Industrial Closures component, as a first step in thinking transnationally about deindustrialization and its politics. Its goal is to critically examine six keywords in deindustrialization studies and consider their historical emergence and explanatory power across multiple national and thematic contexts. What do these concepts offer us? Why do some concepts emerge in one national context but not another or come to have different meanings? And what are the adjacent or intersecting concepts that emerge in their stead?

The first workshop on "Deindustrialization / Deindustrializzazione  / Désindustrialisation / Deindustrialisation / Deindustrialisierung" will take place on Friday, October 16th 10h00-12h00 EST. This workshop considers the emergence of deindustrialization as a core concept in academic scholarship and more widely in different national contexts, its evolving politics, and other adjacent or intersecting concepts such as the German idea of Strukturwandel. Gilda Zazzara will chair, and it will feature presentations from Tim Strangleman, Xavier Vigna, Stefan Berger, Jackie Clarke, Dimitry Anastakis, and Steven High.

In order to attend the workshop, you will need to register via Eventbrite (this is how the zoom link will be distributed). You can follow this link to register for the first workshop: https://bit.ly/2E2ELvC
