Conversations in Working Life and Culture

Symposium series at Cornell

The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation & Archives, New York School of Industrial and Labor Relations, proudly announces a new series of interdisciplinary informal talks, "Conversations in Working Life and Culture," to be held in the Spring of 2001.

The study of the history of work has gained greatly from the contributions of scholars in a variety of disciplines-- anthropology, philosoghy, language studies, art history, feminist theory, and social theory, to name a few. In turn, interdisciplinary discussions have enriched the findings in all of these fields. This series is intended to promote and further such dialogues.

The spring of 2001 roster of speakers include: Gerald Kadish, "Time and Work-Discipline in Ancient Egypt," January 25, 2001; Laura Meixner "Imaging Labor in the Daily Worker: American Cartoons and French Paintings," February 22, 2001; Joe McCartin "PATCO: The Making of a Militant White Collar Union, 1968-80," March 28, 2001; and Vernon Briggs "Immigration and American Unionism," April 26, 2001.

Please join us for the first talk on January 25, 2001 by Gerald Kadish, Professor of Ancient History (Egypt) at Binghamton University, and currently Visiting Professor of Hieroglyphic Egyptian in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University. A popular lecturer, professor Kadish is the author with D.B. Redford of The 23rd Dynasty Chapel of Osiris-Ruler-of-Eternity in Karnak, vol. VI of Publications of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities, Toronto, 1994, among numerous other publications.

All talks will take place between 4:30pm and 6:00pm in the ILR School Lounge, 6th Floor of Library Tower, Ives Hall.
