Baker Library at the Harvard Business School has just completed the first year of a project to identify the records on women's history in its business manuscript collections.
The ongoing survey, which so far has concentrated on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, has identified a wealth of women's history records in over 200 of Baker Library's collections. The material attests to historic female entrepreneurship and offers a great deal of information on the lives of working women. Most surprisingly, perhaps, we have found a large number of women's letters and diaries among business records.
The project's web site, Unheard Voices: American Women in the Emerging Industrial and Business Age, is online this week(1/29). Offering access to the project's database, the site will continue to grow as we begin to survey the twentieth century business manuscript collections.
In the coming year, Baker Library will publish a guide to women's business and economic history in the manuscript collections and present an exhibit featuring material discovered during this survey project.
