RETHINKING BRITAIN 1918-1959

This conference will explore new ways forward in the study of Britain between 1918 and 1959. It will draw together the increasing number of researchers working on the social, economic and cultural aspects of this period, and promote further research in the field. Older assumptions about the mid-twentieth century - as an 'age of domesticity' or 'affluence', for example - will be critically assessed, as will newer approaches, such those foregrounding consumption or which question the analytical relevance of social class or gender. The timescale encourages a re-evaluation of historical continuity and change in the mid-twentieth century. We invite proposals for 20 minute presentations on all aspects of the economic, social and cultural life of the period and particularly encourage papers which give consideration to labour, class, gender and generational relations, and which are broad and/or interdisciplinary in scope. Postgraduate submissions are very welcome.
The deadline for abstracts for what will be an innovative contribution to the understanding of mid-twentieth century Britain is November 7 2003.
