The first Historical Materialism conference in Barcelona will take place next June (27th to the 30th). The conference entitled "Thinking emancipation. Radicalities and Social Movements in a Polarised World" aims to bring together activists and academics. Abstracts can be submitted in English, Spanish and Catalan.

With the generous support of Farman-Farmaian Family, the IISH launches a new fellowship programme named the Prince Dr Sabbar Farman-Farmaian Fellowships for scholars who wish to use its collections for the study of social and economic history of 18-20 century of Iran, whether from a regional, national, or comparative and transnational perspective.
Fellowships are awarded for five months each year. This is a call for applications for fellowships for the period September 2019 - 31 January 2020.
Deadline for applications is 10 May 2019.

The aim of this conference will be to analyse the characteristics of 19th-century French industrialisation and to understand how they distinguish France from other countries that went through the same process in the same era. Instead of using the English case as the only reference (as is customary), particular attention will be paid to a comparison between France and other continental European countries, especially Germany.
From its beginning the Soviet Union was a project of substantial reshaping of gender relations. A central goal of Soviet politics was to encourage women to undertake paid work. In transferring practically all economic and social power to the state, customary gender roles of men as breadwinners and patriarchs were challenged. Starting with war communism through forced industrialization and collectivization to compulsory military service, socialist workers and peasants were tied to the modern disciplinary power as never before.
Can Smart City applications, 3D displays, tweets, or software be considered as documents? Is the concept of ‘‘document’’ still valid in a structurally unstable digital context that is continuously changing? Such questions emerge naturally when we consider the born-digital objects which are thriving today in a great variety of forms. Behind the term “born-digital”, we here refer to any entity, produced using digital technology and perceived by our senses (of sight, hearing or touch). C.
