CFP: conference in Kunmin

International Conference: "Marxism 2001"

Date: June 21-23, 2001
Sponsor: Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences
Place: Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, southwestern China. China's most ethnically, geographically and bio-diverse province.

Fee: $100 (covers registration, food, lodging, and land transportation for the conference).
Registration fee can be paid upon arrival at conference. Non-participants accompanying attendees will be charged US$20 per day for lodging, food and Kunming transportation. Lodging is at CCP Organization Department Guesthouse (equivalent to a 3-star hotel).

Structure: concurrent panels and four plenary sessions, from Thursday morning to Saturday afternoon.

Paper and panel proposals: deadline for submission is April 30, 2001.
Proposals: should concern subjects that intersect with Marxism such as political economy, philosophy, theory and practice of socialism, feminism, race and ethnicity, post-colonial studies, Third World development and cultural and literary studies.
Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be submitted by regular mail, not email to:

Optional Post-conference tour: 6-day Excursion to mountainous, alpine northern Yunnan, including Tibetan plateau. Tour will include national minority villages, historical heritage sites rural economy projects, cultural events, etc. June 24-30. Followed by 3-day Kunming tour. July 1-3. Tour Price US$360 per person. Prices subject to slight modification.

Deadline for application: April 30, 2001

PLEASE DO SOAS SOON AS POSSIBLE. An invitation will be issued to you upon receipt.

USA Group Airline Departure: June 18, United Airlines from Boston, $1,224RT; from San Francisco, $1,164RT. (Boston group will merge with SF group.) To Kunming via overnight in Shanghai (approximately additional $60 for hotel). Leave China with group on July 4, or on other dates for non-tour persons.
