Call for Papers: Workshop on Historical Social Mobility in a Global Perspective

Date: 7 March 2014
Format: 1-day workshop
Venue: Department of Economic and Social History, Utrecht University, Netherlands
Organizers: Marco H.D. van Leeuwen, Felix Meier zu Selhausen, and Jacob Weisdorf

Comparative studies of social mobility in the past have received increased attention in recent years (e.g. http://www.hisma.org/ and http://www.towardsopensocieties.org). Better availability of historical micro data, along with renewed possibilities to code occupations in a fully comparable fashion across time and space, has made it worthwhile to study social mobility in a global perspective. Western Europe and North America have received some coverage already. But knowledge about social mobility in non-Western socieites is still rather limited. The aim of the workshop is to bring together scholars interested in historical social mobility in global and comparative perspectives. We are particularly keen to invite scholars focusing their research on social mobility outside of Western Europe and North America. Other proposals will be considered as well.

The organizers cover up to two nights of accommodation, as well as refreshments, lunch, and dinner during the workshop. Travel expenses will have to be covered by participants themselves. There is a limited amount of funding available for scholars with restricted access to travel funding. Prospective speakers should submit a one-page abstract of the work they would like to present, along with a short CV, to Felix Meier zu Selhausen (f.meierzuselhausen@uu.nl) no later than 24 January 2014. Notification of acceptance will be given by 7 February 2014.

The workshop is sponsored by an ERC Grant "Towards Open Societies" (TOS): http://www.towardsopensocieties.org.
