Labor History Network

CFP: SSHC 2004

The Labor History Network of the Social Science History Association encourages H-Labor subscribers interested in participating in this Fall's annual meeting to submit proposals for panels and/or individual papers www.ssha.org. The 29th Annual Meeting will be held from November 18-21, 2004, at the Palmer House in Chicago. This year's theme, "Markets as Sites of Interdisciplinary History,” seems an especially fruitful area of inquiry for labor and working class scholars, though contributors may, of course, go further afield and need not feel constrained by the theme.

The SSHA is the leading interdisciplinary association for historical research in the US; its members share a common concern forinterdisciplinary approaches to historical problems. The organization's long-standing interest in methodology also makes SSHA meetings exciting places to explore new solutions to historical problems. We encourage the participation of graduate students and recent PhDs as well as more-established scholars, from a wide range of disciplines and departments.

The deadline is looming, proposals for individual papers are due on February 2, 2004 and for complete sessions on February 16, 2004. Prior discussion with network representatives is encouraged, though not required. Reps can assist in grouping together single papers and finding chairs and comment, and can be contacted through the SSHA homepage. Please feel free to e-mail me, Gerald Ronning, or Tobie Higbie with questions or proposal ideas.

Over the course of my association with the network I have found the SSHA meeting to one of the highlights of my academic year, a warm and congenial place to work out scholarly ideas and connect with old and new colleagues.

Hope to see you there!
