Revolutions and Sexualities: Cultural and Social Aspects of Political Transformations
Eighth conference in the Socialism and Sexuality Series
Organized by the Institute of History of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, with financial support from the Polish Historical Society
Krakow, 26-28 September 2007
Starting with the French Revolution of 1789 and through the revolutions of 1830, 1848, 1917 and the revolutionary movements of 1870 and 1968 to the fall of the Iron Curtain, political revolutions effect not only political changes but also deep transformations of social systems, sometimes intentional but often unprompted and leading among other things to modifications of laws and regulations. Usually the revolutionary rebuilding of customs and mentalities becomes the hallmark of the general transformation and the creation of a "better future", "Utopian World" and "New Man".
The revolutionary time often is a period of enormous changes and fluid borders between private and public sphere. Radical reforms tended to raise issues that were often passed over in silence or neglected but now provoked public discourses about the sexual conditions of society, although sometimes the conspiracy of silence on the subject simply continued.
The organizers of the conference taking place just before the 40th anniversary of the 1968 revolutionary movements welcome submissions covering radical rhetorics and related sexual practices:
1. Revolutionary public discourses about sexualityrevolutionary ideas on love and family values, sexual behaviours and moralities, sexuality and gender, functioning of cultural stereotypes of masculinity and femininity, the socialist ideas on sexual matters in practice of the revolution, breaking taboos.
2. Transformation of social and legislative systems on short and long-lasting effect of revolution: legislation, daily life and customs, popular culture, sexual education, sexual practices, spatial organizations of intimate relations
3. Sexual revolution Philosophies of sexual revolution; how revolutionary are revolutions; the men and women who propagated ideas of sexual revolution, the meaning and functioning of the notion of sexual revolution in the fields of historiography and social sciences.

Deadline for application and proposal: June 30, 2007, for paper: September 15, 2007
