‘Let us face the future’ - 70 years on from the 1945 election

2015 marks 70 years since the 1945 election. Labour’s landslide victory in that year and the party’s wide ranging reform programme came to define politics in post war Britain. To mark the event the People’s History Museum has brought together leading historians to discuss the impact of the 1945 election, then and now.
The conference will be held in the first days of the new 2015 parliament, and also coincides with our changing exhibition Election! Britain Votes, running until Sunday 28 June 2015.

Vorwärts : Central-Organ der Sozialdemokratie Deutschlands

Am 1. Oktober 1876 erschien der "Vorwärts", die bedeutendste periodische Publikation der deutschen Sozialdemokratie, zum ersten Mal. "Sozialistengesetz", Erster Weltkrieg mit der Spaltung der SPD und die Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten - in der Geschichte des "Vorwärts" spiegeln sich diese und noch viele weitere historisch bedeutende Ereignisse. Entsprechend groß war und ist das Interesse an einer allgemein zugänglichen digitalen Ausgabe.

International Review of Social History - new issue

In the latest issue of the International Review of Social History (volume 60 part 1, April 2015), Niall Whelehan compares cartoons on revolting peasants in British and Italian 19th century satirical magazines. In some 19th century British satirical magazines, ape-like facial features were employed to illustrate anarchists and nihilists, in order to personify visually political threats to order and stability. During periods of rural unrest in Ireland, however, the figures of simian and reptilian monsters became primarily attached to Irish agitators and peasants.

This book brings together the findings of Knight’s decades of research on the Java sugar industry.
