"Ästhetische Theorie" (Theodor W. Adorno, 1970) und "Ästhetisierung der Politik" (Walter Benjamin, 1936) sind Topoi der "Frankfurter Schule". Faschismusforschungen der Nachkriegszeit gründen auf diesen Entwürfen der Kritischen Theorie ebenso wie die Kunstsoziologie der 1970er Jahre. Mit Herbert Marcuse und der "Neuen Sensibilität" (1969) wird die Tendenz auch als eine Art "Revolutionstheorie" in der 1968er Studentenbewegung wirksam.
