1956

From: London Socialist Historians Group

1956 was the year of Khruschev's secret speech, the year of the Russian invasion of Hungary and the Anglo-French invasion of Suez.

Fifty years on, the London Socialist Historians Group is organising a one day event to assess the historical significance of the events of 1956, particularly in terms of its impact on the left.

We intend to have panels on 1956 in the Middle East and in Hungary to start and finish the conference.

IWW Centenary

From: Julie Herrada

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). The IWW is the oldest anti-capitalist trade union federation in history. Their mission, the abolition of the wage system, still holds today; their practice of justice and fairness and their commitment to worker empowerment serves as a model for all trade unions.

Fifth Estate (http://www.fifthestate.org) will be joining in this centenary celebration by dedicating its Fall issue to the topic of "Wobblies and Work."

Wobbly Culture

Wobbly Culture on laborarts.org
Friends, we have a new exhibit on the LaborArts.org website, created by Joseph Deodato, and we'd be delighted to hear your thoughts.

"Solidarity Forever: A Look at Wobbly Culture celebrates one of the most remarkable developments in the American labor movement's history-- the formation just a century ago of the Industrial Workers of the World. The exhibit features cartoons, graphic art, songs and poetry, evoking the vibrant folk culture of the IWW of the early 20th century.
