"Dear Sisters of the Earth": A History Walk Celebrating Manchester's Rebellious and Revolutionary Women

This walk will explore the exciting history of Manchester's rebellious and revolutionary women. It will include the stories of women at Peterloo, the forgotten feminists of the 1830s, suffragists and suffragettes, the 2nd wave of feminism in the 1970s, Mrs Gaskell, Mother Ann Lee and Mary and Lizzie Burns.
Michael Herbert has been studying and writing about Manchester's radical history for many years. He has an MA in the History of the Manchester Region. He is a Trustee of the Working Class Movement and former editor of the North West Labour History journal. He first book Never Counted Out: the story of Len Johnson, Manchester's black boxing hero and Communist appeared in 1992, his second book The Wearing of the Green: a political history of the Irish in Manchester, appeared in 2000. He is regular contributor to the Radical Manchester history website.The walk will last approximately 2 hours.
