Deadline: 01.08.2010
The Vilnius Yiddish Institute and the Centre for Studies of the Culture and History of East European Jews hope to co-sponsor a workshop in Vilnius, Lithuania on the history of the Jewish Workers' Bund from April 28 to May 1, 2011. The intent of this workshop is to nurture dialogue among those who have embarked on study of the Bund in recent years by encouraging reconsideration of existing works, and by sparking discussion and debate on the both the utility and the significance of the methodologies, approaches, and sources now in use.
The workshop is open to advanced graduate students currently working on relevant dissertations, post-doctoral students, and junior scholars, and will also be attended by senior scholars who will serve as chairs and as commentators.
Conference sessions will be conducted in English. We are eager to foster new perspectives, and particularly welcome proposals dealing with gender issues, the relationship between politics and culture in the Bundist movement, Bundist history after the Holocaust, the relationship of the Bund to other parties and organizations, and proposals which compare the functioning and histories of Bundist organizations in different areas.
The workshop is being organized by Prof. Gertrud Pickhan (Free University of Berlin, Germany) and Prof. Jack Jacobs (John Jay College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, USA) with the assistance of Rebekka Denz (Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg, Germany), and Frank Wolff (Bielefeld University, Germany).
Paper proposals should be submitted no later than August 1, 2010, should be submitted in English, should be no longer than 400 words long, should also include a c.v., and should be submitted via e-mail to [mailto]conference2011@bundism.net[/mailto], as should any inquiries concerning matters related to this project.
