The Sixth Annual Empire and Solidarity in the Americas Conference will be held at the University of New Orleans, October 18-19, 2013. The conference explores the meanings, forms, histories, and futures of North-South solidarity in the Americas. What kinds of transnational ties have groups from both sides of the North-South divide established with each other? What kinds of strategies have they used, and toward what ends? How have these political projects varied across time and space? Previous conference themes have included Solidarity and Consumption, Post-Central America Solidarities, and Latin American Visions of Solidarity, with paper topics ranging from cross-border labor alliances and human rights solidarity to fair trade and immigrant rights activism.
For our Sixth Annual Conference, submissions are welcome on any theme, but we are particularly interested in papers that focus on labor and environment. How, when, and under what circumstances have labor and environmental activists and visions informed one another, worked together, come into conflict, or spoken past one another? How, when, and where have labor groups engaged with environmental issues, actors, and perspectives (and vice versa)? What does labor-environmental internationalism look like in theory and practice?
Paper proposals should include a 100-200 word abstract and a 1-page cv, and be submitted to striffler [at] hotmail.com and achomsky [at] salemstate.edu by April 30, 2013.
The Empire and Solidarity in the Americas Conference is a working conference. Attendees are expected to read all conference papers (about 8) and participate in intensive discussion of each paper. If your paper is selected, you will be an invited guest with conference expenses paid by the University of New Orleans.
