Minorities, Cultures of Integration and Patterns of Exclusion
Turku, 25—28 June 2020
Following an excellent response to our earlier Call for Panels we now cordially invite proposals for individual papers.
Under the theme “Minorities, Cultures of Integration and Patterns of Exclusion”, we seek to stimulate and discuss research on minorities and the processes of past and present minoritization as well as the resistance they engender from a global perspective. We aim to analyse the various concepts of minority and minority positions as well as practices and narratives of inclusion, belonging, and exclusion with a focus on transnational and transregional constellations as well as comparative perspectives. Addressing the exposure to and challenge of historical and contemporary mechanisms and policies of marginalization and exclusion in their relation to past and present cultures of integration we hope to stimulate a reflection on the normative underpinnings of societies.
Our aim is to bring together as many perspectives and case studies as possible so that a stimulating debate about interpretations across historical periods, about comparisons of spaces may emerge, leading towards greater sensibility for border-crossing entanglements and encounters.
With the 6th ENIUGH Congress, we will also continue to explore the relations, transfers, and entanglements between states, peoples, communities, and individuals situated in, or spanning, different regions of the world in a comparative and a longue durée perspective. The common emphasis of the 2020 congress is again a commitment to transcending the confines of national and Eurocentric historiographies.
Since the congress will be organised in panels of two or two and a half hours length, the steering committee of ENIUGH will choose paper proposals with a particular focus on their capacity to allow for fruitful discussions among the panelists.
We specifically look for paper proposals that complement and fill slots in already existing panels while also expanding the intellectual range of the conference’s programme. We particularly welcome proposals addressing the following topics:
- pre-1500 dynamics and spaces of inclusion and exclusion
- populist movements in comparative perspective
- comparative and connected histories of minorities and minority politics
- politics of belonging, marginalization and exclusion by/within transnational movements and
- international organizations
Minority studies are often related to national history. Given the overall aim of the congress we invite for paper proposals which approach the subject from a transnational or transregional perspective.
This is only a selection of topics, we are very much welcoming topics beyond this list that deal with other dimension of world and global historical research.
Proposals
In addition to providing a name, affiliation and email, the proposal should include the title of the paper and an abstract (100 words).
Submission
All proposals for papers must be received by 15 December 2019 and submitted electronically through the ENIUGH congress website: www.eniugh.org/congress/call-for-panels
Dates and deadlines
15 December 2019: Call for individual papers closes; authors of individual paper proposals will be notified of the selection in February 2020
01 February 2020: Opening of conference registration; publishing of the programme
