Call for Papers for the Working Group Labour Migration History (ELHN-WORCK Conference, Vienna, 30 August–3 September 2021)

As part of the 4th conference of the European Labour History Network (ELHN), Vienna, 30 August–3 September 2021, we invite abstracts for papers for a series of sessions organised by the ELHN Working Group Labour Migration History.
Although migration currently receives great attention in political and academic debates, it is often discussed as a humanitarian emergency, a social and a security problem, but very rarely as a labour (history) issue. Similarly, research sympathetic to the struggles of migrants tends to denounce the violation of human and civil rights experienced by migrants but very rarely refers to the breach of labour rights endured by migrants. This working group seeks to generate scholarly debate about the interconnectedness of labour and migration history.
At the ELNH 2021 Conference in Vienna, the Working Group ‘Labour Migration History’ will organise a series of sessions with the overall aim of reflecting upon the importance of labour in analysing changes in migration patterns and policies as well as a focus on migrants’ identities and their broader sense of belonging. With this goal in mind, we welcome contributions from across space and time. However, to facilitate discussion, all papers should reflect on the ways in which links between labour and (historical) migration are conceptualised and the particular methodological approach should be explicated.
This is the first event organised by the newly founded working group and in addition to presenting research papers, time will be allocated to discussing further and future activities.

For those who would like to present their research but cannot attend the ELHN in Vienna next year, we are exploring the possibility of organising an online session with shorter presentations. Please do let us know if you would be interested in presenting online by adding this information when you submit your abstract.
