Quelques semaines après son décès, l’Association des Amis de la FMSH avait organisé fin 2019 une table ronde en mémoire d’Immanuel Wallerstein, son premier président, mais surtout une figure majeure des sciences sociales contemporaines. Cette année, c’est un colloque international qui se penchera sur ses travaux et sur son héritage intellectuel.

 

Organisée par la Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme en partenariat avec la Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian, l'Association des amis de la FMSH et l'Institut Universitaire de France dans le cadre des 60 ans de la Fondation, le colloque "Capitalisme, anticapitalisme et sciences sociales engagées à l'échelle globale : autour de l’œuvre d'Immanuel Wallerstein" se tiendra à Paris, à la FMSH, 54 Boulevard Raspail, les 11 et 12 septembre 2023. 

Immanuel Wallerstein nous a quittés le 31 août 2019. Le 1er juillet précédent, il avait mis un terme au blog qu’il publiait régulièrement depuis octobre 1998, en donnant pour titre à ce numéro 500 : This is the end, this is the beginning.

Depuis sa rencontre avec Fernand Braudel au début des années 1970 jusqu’à son départ définitif au début de 2018, Immanuel Wallerstein avait choisi Paris et la Fondation MSH (qui l’a accueilli chaque année pendant plusieurs mois) comme le pôle européen d’un ambitieux projet visant à envisager à l’échelle du monde, en les replaçant dans leur contexte et leurs dynamiques couvrant un demi-millénaire d’histoire, tous les problèmes majeurs de nos sociétés contemporaines.

Ce projet d’ensemble a été développé par étapes successives concernant tour à tour l’économie et l’histoire de ces cinq siècles, la politique et les mouvements sociaux et l’épistémologie des sciences sociales et humaines, tout en se projetant vers l’avenir. Il a mobilisé autour de lui à chacune de ces étapes des réseaux impressionnants de chercheurs de toutes les parties du monde.

L’objectif de la conférence, organisée en hybride pour lui assurer la plus large participation internationale, sera de dresser le bilan de ce parcours de plus d’un demi-siècle et d’en mettre en évidence l’actualité et la pertinence face aux défis, aux incertitudes et aux inconnues du présent et du futur.

A few weeks after his demise, the Friends of FMSH Association has organised in 2019 a roundtable to pay homage to Immanuel Wallerstein, its first President, but more importantly a key figure of contemporary social sciences. This year, an international conference will assess Immanuel’s work and its contemporary relevance. 

To mark its 60th anniversary, the Foundation Maison des sciences de l'Homme  is organising the international conference "Capitalism, anticapitalism and social sciences engaged on a global scale: around the work of Immanuel Wallerstein" on September 11 and 12, 2023.

Immanuel Wallerstein passed away on August 31, 2019. On July 1 of that year he had brought to a close the blog he had been publishing regularly since October 1998, titling this issue 500: This is the end, this is the beginning.

From his meeting with Fernand Braudel in the early 1970s to his definitive departure at the beginning of 2018, Immanuel Wallerstein chose Paris and the MSH Foundation (which hosted him for several months each year) as the European hub of an ambitious project of considering all the major issues facing contemporary society on a global scale, placing them within their context and their dynamics spanning half a millennium of history. This overall project was developed in successive stages, dealing in turn with the economy and history of these five centuries, with politics and social movements, and with the epistemology of the social and human sciences, all while looking to the future. At each of these stages, he mobilized impressive networks of researchers from all over the world.

Organised in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Association of Friends of the FMSH and the Institut Universitaire de France, the conference aims to take stock of this intellectual path, which has spanned more than half a century, and to highlight its current relevance in the face of the challenges, uncertainties and unknowns of the present and the future.
