Immanuel Wallerstein's World Systems approach has been particularly important and led the term periphery into common scholarly parlance.

It is sponsored by the Department of Middle East, South Asian, and African Studies, and convened by Elleni Centime Zeleke (MESAAS, Columbia University) and Arash Davari (Politics, Whitman College).
