On 29 April the American sociologist and historian Charles Tilly died. For twenty years he served the IISH as a formal and informal adviser, and made significant contributions to our academic and editorial policies.

It consists of a general introduction and brief notes on the Freemasons, Jesuits, Illuminati, Carbonari, Burschenschaften, the mysterious Great Firmament, societies in France, Germany, Russia, the USA and Asia, and older precursors.
