By the 21st century African countries have become more integral part of global processes ranging from trade to regionalization, security to sports diplomacy. 'Old' and emerging actors in the African continent have offered increased engagements in all sectors of development. Although the 'Africa Rising' mantra has been echoed all over the world, sceptical voices about newly formed (but already known) dependencies are also heard.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia holds a repository of over ten million unique items of immense value. It is of utmost importance that its preservation and accessibility are guaranteed.

The visibility of power has always been indispensible for dictatorships - and still is. The practices of such visualizations became particularly relevant in the twentieth century, the age of mass-media imagery. In addition to moving images, it was photography that played a pivotal role, becoming not only a mass medium, but also an everyday practice for the individual photographic actor operating below the level of dominant media representations - a grassroots area that has received much less attention from historians.

De onderzoeksgroep Moderniteit en Samenleving 1800-2000 (MoSa) is op zoek naar een doctoraatsbursaal (m/v) voor een project over de geschiedenis van prostitutie in België.
MoSa bestudeert de politieke en sociale veranderingsprocessen die met de moderniteit worden geassocieerd. MoSa onderzoekt de uiteenlopende wijzen waarop mensen en samenlevingen (in Belgisch, Europees en mondiaal perspectief) veranderingen ervaren en sturen.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 spelled the end of communism in East-Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Like the communist experience itself, postcommunism is seen as a distinct phenomenon, with countries facing a triple transition: political, economic, and societal. So far, the notion of postcommunism has only been used for the Eurasian countries. As a consequence, it is unclear whether postcommunism is a regional phenomenon or truly captures the unique legacies of Leninist regimes worldwide.

We invite contributions to the second Challenging History conference, to be hosted by Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, 29-30 June 2016.

Proposals are welcome from practitioners and/or researchers interested in re-imagining work with difficult and sensitive heritages in a time of unprecedented change, pressure and evolution for museums. The conference will directly address these contexts, and suggest imaginative responses to them, helping delegates to explore why and how challenging histories maintain their relevance.
