Some people say there are parallels between the current Syria combatants and the communists, anarchists and social democrats who, during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) joined the International Brigades to fight against Franco. About 800 Dutch military volunteers were active in Spain. Upon their return their passports were taken from them and they became stateless.

The new century has revealed that the barriers between Socialist economies and the Free World were more porous than expected (Dobson; Cain; Segreto) and that enterprises and businessmen played an important part in East-West interaction (Autio-Sarasmo and Miklossy; Eloranta and Ojala; Jensen-Eriksen). Nevertheless, a serious analysis of trade is clearly lacking from Cold War historiography.
John Tully will give a talk on his 2014 book, Silvertown – The Lost Story of a Strike that Shook London and Helped Launch the Modern Labour Movement on Tuesday 10 February at the New International Bookshop (basement of Trades Hall, 54 Victoria St, Carlton, 6:45pm for 7pm start).

The international research center IGK Work and Human Lifecycle in Global History (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin) and the Preparatory Committee of the 'Institute of Critical Transnational Studies' and History Department at Sogang University in Seoul/ Korea will hold a Summer Academy exploring the historical and contemporary meanings and practices of work and non-work in post-colonial and post-socialist societies.
