As we approach the 90th anniversary of our founding in 1933, we have an ambitious programme to build the Library and its Workers’ School so that we meet the goals of our five-year strategic plan: to become an accredited archive, a national provider of Marxist and labour movement education and to redevelop our building to maximise its accessibility.

Anarchism, as a body of ideas and a political movement, has contributed to reflections and actions over the last century and a half. For decades, it has become an object of research internationally, both within and outside academia, in different areas of knowledge, producing an important expansion and methodological renewal of the field of studies.

Human rights documentation is key for future dealing with the past processes. When it is at risk of destruction or alteration, security copies sometimes need to be placed in a safe haven abroad. Providing guidance to actors in the MENA region, the International Initiative for Safe Havens for Archives at Risk has issued the International Guiding Principles on Safe Havens for Archives at risk and other resources in Arabic.

The precarious geopolitical balance in the contemporary Middle East cannot be understood without considering the circumstances of Ottoman collapse during and immediately after the First World War. The dramatic implosion of this age-old imperium that, during the long nineteenth century, had uneasily struggled to ward off foreign imperial intrusion and lessen its dependence on European capital, was accompanied by unprecedented levels of (genocidal) violence, both on and off the battlefields.
